Questions about italic text
Is this real italic?
Not in the typographic sense. A true italic is a separate cut of a typeface; these are Unicode characters shaped like italics. The practical difference is that these survive copy and paste into apps with no formatting.
Can I combine italic with bold?
Yes. The bold-italic sets are single characters that are already both, so you get the combination in one paste rather than layering two effects.
Why does it look upright somewhere?
That device has no glyph for the italic character and has substituted the nearest plain one. It is a font gap on that device, not a failed copy.
Will screen readers read it?
Poorly. Assistive technology often announces these characters individually or skips them, so avoid italic Unicode for anything a reader must understand.
Does it cost anything?
