How it lands in a conversation

Styled text arrives as ordinary characters, so it sits in a bubble exactly like anything else you type.

Styling a status or message

01

Write the line

Type your status, About text or message. The About field is the tightest at 139 characters, so keep an eye on length before you style it.

02

Choose a style

Bold and italic sets read as emphasis in a chat. Script and small caps read as personality. Both survive the paste into WhatsApp on current versions.

03

Paste and check

Drop it into WhatsApp and look at it before sending. What your recipient sees depends on their phone, not yours, so plainer sets travel further.

Questions about WhatsApp text

Is this different from WhatsApp’s own bold and italic?

Yes, completely. WhatsApp formats with asterisks and underscores and only inside the app. These are Unicode characters, so the styling travels with the text anywhere you paste it, including outside WhatsApp.

How long can my About text be?

WhatsApp caps the About field at 139 characters. Styled characters count the same as plain ones toward that limit, so a decorated line runs out of room sooner than it looks.

Will the person receiving it see the same thing?

Usually, but not guaranteed. Rendering depends on the fonts installed on their device. Widely supported sets such as bold, italic and small caps are the safest.

Can I use it in group names?

Yes, group names and descriptions accept the same characters. Test it after saving, since some older Android builds render fewer sets than iOS.

Does it work on WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Copy on the desktop and paste as normal; the characters are identical on every platform.
